TOP beaches in LIGURIA, Western Riviera

Liguria and the Western Riviera. Beyond the Cinque Terre... Are there more beautiful beaches in the west Liguria?

Celle: scenic view, in the far distance Cape Noli

When travelling to Liguria, you may consider some lovely alternatives to such classic Grand Tour destinations as Portofino, the Poet's Gulf or Cinque Terre.

Western Riviera, though slightly less renowned than Eastern Riviera, is just as charming.
Beach-wise, it offers a variety of long, wide, sandy beaches that stretch from posh and family-friendly Varazze, to favourite late XIXth century painters' destination, Bordighera.

VARAZZE sandy beach

Let's start our tour westbound from Varazze's sandy beaches which welcome free-beach lovers and paying beach-clubs fans as well. Most free municipal beaches now feature showers, while others offer a range of beach commodities at reasonable prices.

Varazze is also a beloved surfers' and windsurfers' destination and a great departure point to the Mount Beigua Natural Park, a great hiking and biking destination and a main stage on the 'Alta Via dei Monti Liguri' Trail.

Posh Celle Ligure features a number of fully equipped beach clubs - some with excellent restaurant service too - and Celle's promenade by the sea offers an unparalleled panorama over the bay and a range of top quality cafeterias and gelaterie (ice-cream parlours).

Albissola Marina & Albisola Superiore: best municipal beaches

The scenic promenade links Celle to nearby twin towns Albissola Marina and Albisola Superiore. Both towns are internationally famous ceramic centres and both feature great beaches. Here you will find some of the best municipal beaches featuring excellent facilities: beach-volley grounds, kiosks, showers.

Best pet friendly beach

Pet lovers will enjoy Bau Bau Village, a pet friendly paying beach-club where dogs are allowed all year round

TO KNOW: Please note that pets are not allowed on municipal beaches in the Province of Savona from June 15th to September 15th, small dogs are allowed at pet friendly and pet-equipped beach clubs.

SAVONA: sandy, wide beaches

Savona is the Province capital: a main cruise hub and a strategic starting point to all main destinations in Liguria. Its beaches are sandy, wide, well equipped.

The 4 kilometre beach from Le Fornaci to Zinola is the longest in Liguria and Savona's sea has been awarded the Blue Flag for its unpolluted waters.

Top 10 beaches in Liguria

The Malpasso beach/Baia dei Saraceni is one of the top 10 beaches in Liguria: its crystal blue, shallow waters remind of the Sardinian sea and make it a great swimming area for non-expert swimmers. Beach shoes are recommended as the sea-ground here is rocky and rather sharp.

Albenga and turtle-shaped Isle Gallinara

Albenga is the westernmost municipality in the Province of Savona: turtle-shaped Isle Gallinara seems to be idly floating across Albenga's bay: this renowned scuba-diving destination, features a number of extraordinary wrecks – some from the Roman age - and remarkable sea-life.
